莫氏硬度(金刚石为10)9.0。难溶。在高温下仍能保持优良的绝缘性能。能溶于强碱，呈现两性。在自然界以绿桂石(3BeO·Al2O3·6SiO2)形态存在。 主要用于制造陶瓷制品，在高温下用于在铍熔点以上的核装置中。还可用于铀反应堆中制取钚(Pu)。其活性磷光体能产生类似象牙色的光排，用于某些荧光灯中。
